London’s pilot is part of a national initiative that will see various online approaches tested. Together they will inform development on 111 to take it beyond a telephone service so more people can easily access health advice, support and information. At the moment in London, different ways of accessing mental health services are also being tested and developed. For example, the telephone system for 111 is helping connect patients directly with services based on care plans. This in turn is being tested in combination with another London initiative related to accessing mental health crisis care via the telephone. At the time that London’s NHS 111 app launched, a clinically safe mental health assessment tool in an online space had yet to be developed. However, the team is working towards it and engagement with services users, clinicians, representative groups and charities will be conducted as part of the development plan.
